What sort of materials do you use?

METALS

Metals used for the earring itself:
-Gold Plated Brass
-14k Gold Filled
-Sterling Silver 925
-Stainless Steel (Square Studs)
-Gunmetal Black Plated Brass (select designs)
-Copper Plated Brass (select designs)

All metals are NICKEL AND LEAD FREE except surgical steel (see note).

**Surgical steel (the stainless steel used for clip-ons, leverbacks and Square Stud posts) naturally contains some nickel. It is locked into the metal, so very little reaches the skin, but it is not zero. If you are very sensitive to nickel, choose titanium, 14k gold filled, or sterling silver ear wires.

Ear Wire Metal Options:

Studs:

  • Gold Plated Brass

Clip-Ons:

PAPER

All origami is made from real paper. There are no plastics, glass molds, or 3D prints involved! These are individually hand folded creations.

Kami paper is the traditional paper I use (what you think of as "normal origami paper"). It is very thin which makes smaller and tighter folds cleaner and more crisp.

Washi paper is used (See: Washi Cranes and Studs) for larger and bolder pieces. It's about 2-3x as thick as traditional origami paper. The paper is more like fabric as it is made from the inner bark of plants such as the Gampi Tree and Mulberry plant. The paper is hand screened in layers, creating a distinct pattern and strong color. Washi paper is tough and takes more time to fold.

SEALANTS

  • Krylon Triple Thick Crystal Clear Spray
  • Liquid Glass from Blick. A liquid acrylic resin.
How do I take care of my origami jewelry?

Origami Jewelry

  • All metals are NICKEL AND LEAD FREE except surgical steel (stainless steel clip-ons, leverbacks and Square Stud posts), which contains some nickel locked into the metal. Very little reaches the skin, but if you are very sensitive to nickel, choose another metal.
  • Made from real paper, with acrylic treatment. Safe in pouring down rain, showering in hot water is not. Avoid swimming. Waterproof up to 5 mins in cold water.
  • Apply hair spray and makeup first, then put on your jewelry.
  • Origami is durable and slightly flexible. Keep in mind it is made from paper and is still delicate. Not designed with the intention of surviving the willful hands of young children.
  • Re Metals: Sterling Silver naturally and slowly tarnishes. Gold Plated Brass tarnishes a bit as well. It's called "Oxidation". Carefully clean metals with soft cloth after wear and store in an airtight container to prevent tarnish. The more you wear your jewelry the less it tarnishes!
What makes the jewelry waterproof?

Each piece of origami is carefully and thoroughly coated with:

  • 2 coats Krylon Triple Thick Crystal Clear Spray
  • 2 coats of Liquid Glass from Blick. A liquid acrylic resin.

And ample drying time between each coat as I rotate each origami repeatedly with tiny tweezers while drying to prevent bubbles and bumps. The holes around where the metal pierces the crane are reinforced with a 3rd coat of resin.

See video at the top of this page for an example.
